Tartu (also known as Dorpat or Yuryev) is the second largest city in Estonia with a population of 100, 000. It is a Hanseatic city and a university town. Dating back to 1030, it is the oldest city in Estonia.

Tartu (Duits, hist. : Dorpat, Russisch, hist. Юрьев ; Joerjev) is de tweede stad van Estland en de hoofdstad van de provincie Tartumaa. De stad ligt in het zuidoosten van het land aan de Emajõgi, de rivier die de twee grootste meren van Estland met elkaar verbindt. De stad telde op 1 januari 2011 103. 740 inwoners, waarvan ca. 80% Esten. De stad heeft sinds 1632 een universiteit, de belangrijkste van het land. Zeer veel hoger opgeleide Esten hebben enige jaren van hun leven in deze stad doorgebracht: het 'Athene van de Emajõgi' geldt dan ook als de geestelijke hoofdstad van het land.
