Food was good but the stars are primarily for service and attention. My wife avoids gluten and as we were discussing options with our waiter he gave us a detailed description of how they ensure there is no cross contamination in the kitchen. In fact they have a separate kitchen and the chefs have to change clothes if they go from one to the other. Needless to say, we had the best gluten free pizza ever. Lively atmosphere so would not be a great place for a quiet conversation.

I loved the place and the service provided. High standard food. I really enjoyed eating at Il Canale on my last night on DC.

We love this place! After several visits we know we’re going to make this one of our regular dinner spots. The service is amazing, and so fast! Even on a crowded and packed Friday night, we were seated quickly and before the wine was even opened our appetizer was there! Our sever, Aldo, was awesome! He recommended a wine from his native town in Italy, and it was delicious! The food is amazing, I’ve enjoyed the lobster ravioli multiple times and we’ve tried other items as well. Highly recommend the gluten free pasta as well if you are gluten free - can’t taste the difference! Wonderful place with great service and what a value on price as well! We will be coming here regularly for a long time!

Genuine Italian food. They make a nice show of explaining the high quality ingredients and skillful process involved in making a true neopolitan pizza on their menu, and indeed it truly is a perfect meal. I'm not sure if any other Italian shops on the street can boast the same pedigree, but our experience here was fantastic, with helpful and professional service, great menu, overall feel of a restaurant that is running exceptionally well with people who are great at what they do working there.

UPDATE: I loved Il Canale and am sad to change my review from 5 stars. Ever since they expanded the restaurant and stopped using their original pizza oven, the pizza has gone down in quality. What was once perfectly chewy, saucy, and oh so good and authentic (to a New Yorker and picky eater) has become average and normal. Better than delivery pizza but not a pizza that I would rave about. The pastas have also declined in flavor and seem not to have such great sauces (perhaps they are using lower quality or canned ingredients). I would still go back because it is a place I have frequented for quite some years and is a little better than average, but it has declined and is no longer mouth-watering amazing. Hopefully the kitchen and staff will realize that they need to return to the original cooking style and techniques before the expansion. The place was also much cuter and inviting with the smaller venue, but expanded it has become a little chain/cheesy feeling.
Best pizza I have ever had, really good pastas and salads. Very nice staff and service. Cute and friendly place. I am a very picky eater (for good and fine dining) and this definitely hits the spot. Amazing food and well priced. I definitely would recommend and love to come here all of the time.
