There are several Gustav's throughout the Clackamas, North Portland, and Vancouver areas, but this franchise deserves notable commendation. This Gustav's on Sandy Blvd in North Portland was recently remodeled with traditional Germanic decor and interior design. The host always greets every customer or party, and quickly seats along the windows with outdoor views. The server was friendly and professional with deep knowledge of the menu. The traditional Germanic menu items are focused and tight knit categorized into appetizers, salads, entrees, and deserts. There is a great bevy of alcoholic beverages from the mild, low ABV percentage beers to the deep dark rich beers and wines. My personal favorite is the Cinnamon Fireball on a cold snowy evening or a nice Merlot on those rainy overcast days. The restrooms are clean and well lit with regular staff checks and consumable replenishments. However, their parking lot is small and always occupied, so if you want a space, make sure to dine during off peak hours. If not, you might have to search for a parking spot on Sandy Blvd or the residential cross street. The food is excellent with a plethora of traditional Germanic dishes and the flavors are authentic down to the desserts. The bread dessert contains an ingredient made in Germany, then flown into Gustav's for final preparation and baking. The Rhineland Feast is plentiful, but the stuffed pork filet is on the dry side for my taste. The Happy Hour's build your own Hamburger is outstanding with an eclectic selection of toppings including my favorite a fried egg, layered with sauteed mushrooms, then sprinkled with grilled onions. My only complaint is the BYO Burger comes with half a vertically sliced pickle, but I prefer a whole pickle or even both halves of the pickle. Nevertheless, I had several wonderful dining experiences overall at various times, but be sure to visit during their Happy Hours: Monday through Friday from 12 to 6 PM, or Saturday mornings, or all day Sunday! Otherwise, you will neither find parking in their lot nor on the curb, and you will wait 15 minutes to half an hour minimum for a table in their smaller than usual dining room as compared to other Gustav's.

I will miss you, Rheinlander. I had some great times here. Closed forever after Dec. 31 to make way for more overpriced apartments your average Portlander could never afford.

Sadly, this Gustav's is closing sometime around January 1st, 2017. Fortunately, the other sites are remaining open.

If you're in the mood for a great beer and traditional German fare, Gustav's is amazing. I've been three times and each time was better than the last.

The absolute BEST restaurant experience I ever had. We sat in Der Reinlander and Isaac was our server and he went as far as singing a song with everyone in the dining room while we all clapped and sang along. The food was incredible, the service was great, the venue was beautiful, and everyone in the building was in good spirits. It was the most fun I have ever had. Bar none.
