First, let me start off by saying, I love Caribbean Food!! It has been a part of my life forever! I am a New Yorker and everywhere you turn, especially in Brooklyn, there is Caribbean food. So, when a friend (of Guyanese decent) visited and found this place on the web, I was over the moon excited to come and tek a taste. When we entered, we were immediately hit with the scents of "home." I ordered the oxtail with macaroni and steamed veggies . She ordered the snapper with macaroni and steamed veggies. An older woman ran off with our order (not totally sure why). As we waited, we chatted with the cashier. She was very friendly and kind. Gave us tips on where to go for a good party (including places we could listen to reggae and soca in Louisville). We waited about 15 minutes before our food resurfaced. When I saw the plates, I was confused and perplexed. First and foremost, I immediately noticed a very familiar looking veggie combo and a very unappealing looking macaroni and cheese. When we sat down to eat, our feelings were completely confirmed. The veggies WERE FROZEN!! The "steamables" kinds that come in a package at Walmart. They were NOT fresh. NOT hand cut and NOT seasoned. They were an offense to the beautiful steamed veggies I am used to back home. In no way is this meant to be a slight, but if you open up a restaurant, especially a Caribbean one, I expect the food to be fresh and delicious. In no way is it ok to serve frozen vegetables to customers. The macaroni was another story entirely. It was not the macaroni pie I am used to from T&T. Not even the southern type that comes casserole-like. It was BOX macaroni and cheese. It was soupy and had a whole heap of black pepper on it. WDMC? Now on to the snapper. It was over cooked, cold, and dry. Snapper is a beautiful and delicate fish that should be cooked slightly. The flavoring was not terrible, but because it was dry as hell you could barely taste the flavors. The oxtail- well it was cooked fine, but I did not taste one allspice berry, not one butter bean in sight, and no thyme to be named. Again, this is not meant to be an insult (except it was an insult to eat this). Because I will be in town for a while (several years), I would love to go back and have another try. But, I hope the food will DRASTICALLY improve. Even if this was an off day, there is no way a person can serve customers a frozen veggie combo and call it food. Nor can you serve that soupy macaroni and call it mac and cheese. Oh I forgot to mention, the food was COLD! I want you to improve. I want you to succeed (my people! I will always support them). But, I can only reasonably do so if the food is good. Maybe folks in these parts are not familiar with good Caribbean food, but for those of us longing for a taste of home, I hope you really get better. I will come back. I will try again. But, you must try as well!
