Pablo Artal has carved out a little empire in this relatively unknown school. The university is not really featured in any of the major rankings (Times, ARWU, etc.), but his lab is very well known internationally in my field. As with any group that has grown to that size, it's no longer possible for him to make sure all his researchers produce top-level work. Since I've left academia, I can provide an unbiased judgement on the quality of research coming out of there. I think many of their papers are great contributions to our field, but some seem to intentionally hide fundamental errors which actually adds work for the rest of us who are just digging for the right answer as part of our own work. That's why the 3 stars... lovely facility though! Also, I don't understand why Pablo never smiles in any of his photos - always has this big-ego frown that give us scientists a bad rep socially...
