It is a landmark. But sadly, not maintained. Apathetic staff, vendors, and heedless visitors dump garbage on the monolith.

A Geoheritage spot. This awesome Granite gneiss named after peninsular India, the only Earth-rock can be seen from space. Fabulous, exotic: world’s most abundant Rock type
‘Peninsular Gneiss’ the name denotes a granite gneissic complex spreaded over 1/3 of the Indian Peninsula. The exposure at Lalbagh is one of the best exposures of this rock mass, protruding high above the ground as a hillock shows long bands creating artistic patterns which are worth seeing.
The monument is located in the southern part of Bengaluru the capital city of Karnataka state, India and is easily approachable by road. Lalbagh is one of the most celebrated botanical gardens in the city of Bengaluru. One of the four Towers to restrict the city limits was erected on Lalbagh hills by Magadi Kempgowada, the then feudal leader under the feudatory of the Vijayanagara empire. The Lalbagh hill is composed of dark biolite gneiss of granitic to granodioritic composition containing streaks of biolite. Vestiges of older rocks are seen in the form of enclaves within the gneiss.
Gneisses and related granitoids constitute one of the most abundant rock types exposed on earth. Peninsular Gneiss of the region is dated 2500 to 3400 million years that accreted in three major episodes, i.e. 3.4 Ga, 3.3-3.2 Ga and 3.0-2.9 Ga. The quarries of Lalbagh are of great importance for researches on earth sciences towards evolution of the terrain.
Gneiss is a coarse-grained high grade metamorphic rock formed at high pressures and temperatures in which light and dark mineral constituents are segregated into visible bands and the dark border is usually rich in biotite mica.
Most visited Geological monument in the country, mainly by the tourists and known as Kempgowada Top located in the Lalbagh Botanical Garden. GSI declared it as a National Geological Monument, since Lalbagh is frequented by visitors from all over the world. It is also called the Lalbagh rock.
The rock shines white after the rains and attracts attention of the visitors who excitedly climb the rock mass to the tower at the top to get a panoramic view of the gardens and the city.
The monument, located in the southern part of Bengaluru, 4km from the Vidhana Soudha within the Lalbagh gardens, is easily approachable by road. Bengaluru is well connected by road, rail and air with the rest of the country and is also well known internationally.

An alluring tourist destination, having a peninsula terrain comprising of temples, lakes, to be precise its a perfect place to hang around or plan a picnic with family and friends. The rock surrounded lake is the most loved spot over here. The cool soothing breeze gives a refreshing n chilling experience. Even the bird watchers can enjoy their take. Ita preferable to visit on a cloudy day.
