Horrible! WORST customer service experience EVER in my life. March 31, 2017. I posed a simple question (in French) about a children's book to two booksellers and one responded with a sarcastic remark and then proceeded to break out in laughter with her colleague (at me, in front of my 5 year-old-son who is fully bilingual). I then asked her in French, "Is there something funny?", to which she approached me and blurted out: "C'étais une blague." To which I replied (in French), "Really, I asked you a simple question."
Is it a joke to make fun of customers who ask a legitimate question? Is it "une blague" to make fun of someone's French? (The question I asked was referring to the age group the book was appropriate for.) I would have complained to the manager but I was in a rush; I left the store completely FUMING, so much so that I knocked books over on the way out. I have travelled the world and have never had such a RUDE encounter in the public/'customer service' field. I plan to lodge an official complaint with the store and the head office. Since this episode I spoke to a French neighbour who also had a nasty experience here. She was looking for an English book for her daughter and the bookseller quipped, "Oh, all you parents think your kids are bilingual just because they take a few hours of English a week." (My neighbour did not waste her breath to explain that her daughter grew up in the UK and is at a bilingual school in Lyon.)
