It is for me a complete mystery why people give this hostel such a high score. The rooms are claustrophobic at best, the kitchen is scabby, breakfast is a joke and most of all, David, the owner is condescending and very rude in his communication. He told my wife that he already had some very rude guests, but that is no excuse at all to assume that all guests are like that : since I know that most of Costa Rica is smoke-free, I asked him if I could smoke in the hostel and he told me, yes of course you can smoke in the back. The next day, I got a scolding of him because I had used a bowl as an ashtray and did not use the official ashtray. OK, I should have not used a bowl but the 'official' ashtray was a plant pot next to the garage bin. Perhaps he should put labels instead of scolding at people. Same when I accidently bumped into lamp (and hurt my head pretty badly), he scolded at me. Also when asking for tips and places to go, it feels more like a competition with him, making sure he always has the upper hand in the conversation (he knows better places, prices, experiences,...) and we noticed on a couple of occasions, he will twist to the truth to have the better story/tip/experience. When he was giving suggestions for an itinerary, he told us we easily could get a plane ticket for 20 dollar for another airport. When I checked the website he mentioned, and did not find the same prices, I asked him how he did it and then he had to admit that he gets discounts because he knows people at the airport. If I did not had checked we would have changed our itinerary and ended up paying way more for a place ticket than in our initial plan. My wife told. E the same thing when he was giving advice the next time for our itinerary : often he will give a tip and when you ask for more clarification, it becomes very clear that he is not knowledgeable and twist around his story to still be right. Also, he feels attacked very fast : we had trouble with our mastercard in Costa Rica and discovered that it was because there is a country imposed limit on foreign cards. When I explained him, so he could help other guests who may have the same problem, he dismissed it as being our cards being the problem. Finally, last night, he started to badmouth one of the other guests. This is totally unprofessional. For me, David, is definitely not someone who should be running an hostel.

Best hostel I have ever stayed at. The manager was really accommodating and helped answer questions about local attractions. I have been here a few times and I would go back for sure. It was within waking distance from a lot of public bus stations and really close to downtown. They have a storage area that you can use for free and breakfast was included.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. Absolutely brilliant hostel, David is an amazing host who knows pretty much all you need about Costa Rica, let alone the rest of the world. Facilities are amazing here, extremely, nice showers, great breakfast and great beds. Close to everything. But the real stand out of this place is David the owner, friendly, and helped me out in a major way. Only hostel I'll stay in in San Jose.

Very friendly and helpful host. Very clean and neat. I felt very well and spend a nice time there. I can recomend it to everybody and would come back.
