Quieter than your average bar so that you can actually have a conversation! Decent selection and pricing

This place has a lot of character - good for drinks with friends

Normally I would give this excellent bar a 5 star review however the artist they had playing tonight was a total mismatch for the location. The artist was Tzadeka and she performed a blend of hip hop and alternative that may have been welcome in a different venue but was totally out of place here. Please stick to talented local artists with a focus on rock, alternative rock, folk, acoustic and blues rather than a crazy acoustic hip hop artist like Tzadeka. Totally not my style or anyone else in the bars judging by the lack of interest and applause

Fantastic bar. No judgy people, great music and beer. Classic Irish style. Excellent patio. Loud when you want it to be, quiet when you want it to be. No douche bags.

The Empress has become every bit a staple of the Arts district community as any place has ever been, even blocks away in the heart of foot traffic and fancy rents. The staff has the most to do with that, as well as the comfort of the room and the quality of the regulars. A go-to local with a fantastic patio, and a place that never feels generic or unwelcoming.
