Hunter hills is the beginning of the Great North Walk to Newcastle . The first section of the route is mainly through an urban environment . The Great North Walks takes about 12 days .
Kellys Bush is place to visit before the start of Great North Walk.
Kellys Bush was purchased in 1892 by Mr Kelly who established an tin smelting works known as the Sydney Smelting Company . It also protected Aboriginal middens and provided locally important habitat for many creatures and wild flowers.
This reserve is most significant of the green spaces . It is Kellys Bush which in the early 1970 's became an important battleground for the urban conservation and gave birth to the Green Bans Movement . As such , it has become a symbol of the growth of urban green consciousness in Sydney .
