Delhi's commercial and geographic hub used to be Connaught Place, a fact reflected in the area's hub-and-spokes layout. Connaught Place (commonly referred to as just "C. P. ") remains popular with tourists, particularly backpackers—hence its abundance of beggars, money changers both legitimate and illegitimate, and drug dealers—but it's no longer the capital's nerve center. As development sprawls south, spilling over into suburbs, South Delhi has become the center of social and, to a large extent, commercial life.

Therefore, the culture of Delhi represents the culture of all the states of India in parts. In other words, it is a kind of synthesis and reflection of the culture of India, as a whole. Being the capital of India, New Delhi has also become the main center of politics, from where all the decisions are made and policies passed. However, the city does have a history of its own which has made some impact on its cultural scenario.
New Delhi city is acclaimed for being the cultural capital of India. The spectacular architecture of Delhi city is evident through its antique monuments. This city witnesses an interesting blend of diverse cultures (some even 5000 years old).
Delhi has always had a mysterious eternity, the city having witnessed empires rise to glory and fall to ashes. The contemporary Delhi is a culmination of seven cities built by different emperors. Ruins of this ancient city are found even today and now these are converted to some major tourist attractions. Among some spectacular historic sites, the most prominent ones are: Qutub Minar, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, India Gate, Lotus temple, Humayun tomb and Rashtrapati Bhavan.

New Delhi is tevens een gemeente en een district van het Nationaal Hoofdstedelijk Territorium van Delhi, en vormt samen met de stad Delhi en een aantal kleinere steden één stedelijk gebied. Meestal worden in India de beide steden samen Delhi genoemd. De gemeente New Delhi heeft een oppervlakte van 42, 7 km² en 294. 783 inwoners (2001). Het district New Delhi heeft een oppervlakte van 35 km² en 171. 806 inwoners (2001).
